EMM’s lack of maintenance is disconcerting

An Alberton resident wrote to the RECORD to voice her dissatisfaction with the Ekurhuleni municipality.

I GREW up in Alberton and I am very unhappy with the state of Alberton.

I remember how beautiful it used to be here, a wonderful place to grow up. I recall our municipality constantly being awarded best municipality in the country, sadly, nowadays it is very far from that.

I want to list the following and as a ratepayer, want it put on record as a complaint to EMM:

1. I pay rates, taxes, and refuse every month, and the rubbish is supposed to be collected on Thursdays. This however never happens, sometimes weeks go by without it being collected (which is a health risk) and when they do come, it’s on a Saturday or Sunday, for them to get paid overtime no doubt.

2. Many street lights in Florentia, Verwoerdpark and sections of Ring Road East have been out for months, this is very dangerous as some women, like myself, who work late, have to drive home in the pitch black.

3. Driving along Ring Road East (on the vlei side where taxis park), you can see the power lines hanging down onto the ground, I am certain this cannot be safe and it’s been like that for several months already.

4. Road signs and street name signs like those on Grewar Street and the corner of Smit and Du Preez streets are badly damaged, others are missing altogether.

5. Potholes are not fixed, and when they eventually do get to it, they do such a bad job that sometimes it’s back a few days later.

6. Grass and weeds are growing in the tar and on pavements, which damage them, and on the rare occasion that the grass is cut in the parks and on the pavements, they just leave the cut grass lying there and they don’t do anything about the weeds and grass damaging the roads.

7. Trees on pavements are not pruned, and when it is done, branches are left there.

8. Litter is everywhere.

9. Road markings are faded and hardly visible.

10. Drains are not being cleaned and because of all the rubbish everywhere, they clog up the drains, which leads to flooding, and is a health risk.

11. There is no policing or law enforcement by EMPD, everyone just skips stop signs and go through red lights, talk on their phones while driving, drive recklessly, urinate in public places, etc.

12. Places like the old Racecourse are overgrown with trees and weeds, has rubble everywhere, and is used as a dumping site. Aside from being terrible to look at, it is a massive security risk.

The RECORD went along with Nadia so she could show us some of the problem areas and has forwarded these complaints to EMM and is awaiting feedback. We will keep our readers updated on their response and any progress made.
