Xerox Lions beat Vodacom Blue Bulls

The score board on 38-17 at full time was a fair reflection of the game.

THE Xerox Lions proved to be to good for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in thrilling game on Saturday, April 23, at A-Sqaure Forklift Alberton Rugby Club, in an Absa Currie Cup match.

The Lions started off impressively and appeared to be well organised with their defence, which put the Bulls under pressure as they launched their attacks.

With the Lions keen to give the ball air and the opening try by speedster Anthony Volmink, spectators had a good indication of what was going to come. Volmink dotted down under the sticks without a hand being laid on him and when Shaun Reynolds added a conversion to his earlier penalty, the lead was stretched to 10-0. To be fair, the Lions looked in control from then on.

Although the Bulls did breach the Lions defence with a try by Corrie Els and a penalty by Joshua Stander, further tries by Arnout Malharbe and Jaques Nel stretched the halftime lead to 24-10 for the Lions.

In the second half it was a closer affair but the Lions managed to score two tries through captain Ruaan Lerm and Stokkies Hanekom while Reynolds added the conversions.

The Bulls managed a second try through Tapiwa Tsmondo and conversion by Stander, but with the score 38-17 at the end, it was a fair reflection of the game.

Well done to both teams and the president of the GLRU, Kevin de Klerk for posing for pictures with their fans.

Special thanks to the GLRU and everyone involved at A-Sqaure Forklift Rugby Club for a super day. The biggest thanks must go to the fans, without them the day would not have been possible.

It was an awesome occasion and with 16 784 fans attending, the match was well supported by the Alberton community. Fans even had the opportunity to pose for a photo with the coveted Currie Cup trophy and loads of people came through the Alberton RECORD’s media tent to have their photos taken.
