SPCA response (Refers to letter printed August edition)
We certainly regret any inconvenience which may have been caused to Norma Rudham in her quest to donate to an SPCA.
Letters and e-mails regularly circulate about the fate of one of our SPCAs and on occasion the information may not be accurate or may be quite historic.
Four SPCAs have closed their doors during the course of this year which has been a tragedy for the animals that we collectively serve to protect. These were the Harrismith, Breede Valley, Oudtshoorn and Zeerust SPCAs. Most of our 90 remaining SPCAs are constantly fundraising and appealing for donations. As each SPCA is autonomous, we are not aware of every appeal that is circulated but would certainly encourage donors to support their local SPCA in particular, as each one is reliant on community support for its existence.
As the movement is dedicated to animal welfare, our SPCAs try to stay positive and we are not aware of any SPCA that is closing its doors but must hasten to add that SPCAs do rely on donors and sponsors in order to keep their doors open, so we would urge members of the public to support their nearest SPCA in whatever small way they can.
