Yesteryear in Eden Park

THIS is what memories are made of – going back to 1976, when residents started moving into the Alberton Town Council houses, built in Eden Park.

The late Stanley da Gama was one of the earlier residents in Eden Park, when there were houses only in Lancia, Cortina and Fiat streets, with the rest of the streets, from Ford up to Petersen, still just a vast, empty veld.

“Our house, at the corner of Fiat and Hudson streets, was the last house in the area,” said Lillian da Gama with a reminiscent smile.

”The houses in Fiat Street were just along the one side, facing an empty veld.

“Where the Methodist and other churches are now built, was just veld, with the demolished walls of an old plot house.”
