Hylton’s own knight’s tale

The different events require different equipment, and there are judges to check that all kits are historically accurate before the modern-day knights are allowed to take part.

AN Alberton resident has returned from Portugal after competing in the International Medieval Combat Federation (IMCF) World Championships.

Hylton Kleynhans (38) travelled to Portugal to face other fighters, from 23 countries worldwide, in combat events that real knights of medieval times may have competed in.

Kleynhans came fourth in the Sword and Shield event. “It’s not an event that I really focus on or train for much, so I’m pleasantly surprised by my position,” said the Brackendowns resident.

The sport is small in South Africa, and not many clubs are available to practise the ancient art of fighting.

“I’ve done this for about three and a half years. I enjoy it, but it does take quite a lot of time and money. Sponsors are very difficult to come by, and having to travel for tournaments, all the armour, swords and shields etc, makes it expensive,” said Kleynhans.

The different events require different equipment, and there are judges to check that all kits are historically accurate before the modern-day knights are allowed to take part.

“With long swords, you can do front kicks, you can try to push people over, stuff like that. You actually have to be really fit and it helps if you’re strong, so I gym regularly. The sport is not about violence, it is just a lot of fun and the participants at events are from all over the world and are friendly and willing to help you,” added Kleynhans.

Kleynhans showed the RECORD some of the swords and armour he uses, and everything is legitimately heavy and certainly looks authentic.

When Kleynhans isn’t training or taking part in these competitions, he coaches others to promote this fascinating sport at his club, The Juggernauts.
