OFTEN I find someone working in the electrical box in Bendor Street, Brackendowns, as it cannot lock.

On Saturday, June 25, a contractor busy with a prepaid meter query, put my power off by accident as the switches in the box are not marked .

I asked the contractor why there are only two meters and one prepaid meter in this box and he said that the prepaid meters are being stolen for the kilowatt money value to be used wherever.

I also asked him how the households are being charged for electricity and he said they are not paying and that the cables are running straight to the unmetered houses for free power.

“We are aware of incidents of theft of prepaid meters all over Ekurhuleni. We also are aware that the older meter boxes are not very secure and that the rate of unauthorised access has risen dramatically over the last couple of years. We are, however, busy with an ongoing multi-year project to refurbish old meter enclosures,” said one of the engineers in the Energy Department.
