Lions roar to victory over Bulls

The Alberton Rugby Club hosted the final of the Amateur Provincial Competition held recently.

THE A-Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club hosted the final of the Amateur Provincial Competition last week.

The tournament started on Monday, August 22, and saw the Lions, Lions XV, Falcons, Leopards, Pumas Highveld, Pumas Lowveld, Limpopo Blue Bulls and Blue Bulls teams, take each other on, in an exciting exhibition of talent on offer in the amateur arena.

In the final on Friday, August 26, the Lions took on the Blue Bulls, for bragging rights in this long-standing rivalry they share.

It turned out to be a fairly close game, but the Lions came out on top, with a score of 26-22.

The tournament consists of teams from the northern regions playing against each other, and at a later stage the winners of the other regions will also play against each other.

Former Springbok Kaya Molatana, who has been coaching the winning team for a few weeks, says he is happy with the win, but that they could have done much better. “I’m glad we pulled out a win, but I know we are capable of much better,” said Molatana.

Several players stood out in the final and throughout the tournament, including fly half Arno Coetzee, whose kicking was exceptional, and the wings, Dean Gordon and Bryce Nicholson, who racked up the points for the Lions with their fancy footwork and outright, unadulterated speed.
