Alberton North – the new dump

The whole parking lot is just covered in oil and this is a huge health risk.

I just want to bring to your attention that I went and took out post at Alberton North (old Squeeze-in Spar) post boxes yesterday, and the scene there with all the mechanics that have moved over from the motor spares place to the parking lot is disgusting. You can’t even drive next to the fence of the school as the spares, beer bottles, tyres and oil is lying there.

The whole parking lot is just covered in oil and this is a huge health risk. When it rains, all that oil is going to be in our water drains, then tomorrow we will all be drinking gearbox oil and motor oil and getting sick and we won’t know why. Also everywhere you go it is just papers and food wrappers all the way out, really disturbing.

There is also the risk of becoming a high crime area as older people can be attacked when going to take out post. I am also part of the CPF and would like to see that something is done urgently. We can’t let the people just take over and do what they please and put our health and our kids’ health is in jeopardy and our lives and elder people’s lives.

Hopefully we as Alberton residents and our councillors can sort it out, otherwise I will have to report it to the Environmental Department.

The RECORD recently attended the Alberton North Forum, a group of role players in the community, aimed at tackling many of the problems the area faces, and one of the concerns raised were that of oil contaminating the water.

The owner of the premises also hired SOG Security that blocked of the parking lot to prevent these people from gaining access and causing further harm.

The RECORD also forwarded an email to newly elected ward 37 councillor, Tiaan Kotze for comment, and a plan of action on September 13 but to date, received no feedback from him.
