FIVE speedsters were arrested in Alberton on Sunday, October 2, including a man in a BMW 3 series (old box shape) sedan who claimed he was rushing to work with a colleague. The 21-year old clocked 174km/h.

The operation was conducted by the EMPD High Speed Unit between 05:00 and 11:00 on the N12 freeway eastbound, between Voortrekker and the R59 bridge.

The rest of the speedsters were arrested between 06:15 and 08:30, doing speeds of 162, 166, 169 and 172km/h respectively. The arrested drivers were detained at the Alberton Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving, but subsequently released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

The speedsters are expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
