Boys tour to Ireland

Four boys from General Alberts were chosen for the team.

While on rugby camp in March 2016 at Riebeek-Kasteel near Cape Town, four General Alberts Primary School boys were chosen as part of an invitational u.13 schools rugby team – which was invited to play rugby against schools in Ireland.

The boys, Dehan Pretorius (captain of the team), Chrinovich Bokoli, Shadrach (Shaggy) Wheeler and Ronan van Helsdingen, left on September 24 – to be met by the two coaches, Stephan Sharp and SG du Toit from Riebeek Kasteel. They joined squad training to play a match against Riebeek Wes, which their ‘Riebeek-Kasteel’ team won 45-0. The team of 15 boys and two coaches left on Tuesday, September 27 for Dublin.

Three more matches were played as follows:

  • They beat Terenure Rugby Club 51-0.
  • Cork Rugby club were defeated 39-17.
  • Young Munster also lost to Riebeek Kasteel 32-5.

“I’m told that the boys were very well accepted and treated abroad; and they all shared in a great experience,” said Nerinne Hulley, SGB treasurer for General Alberts Primary School.

According to Dehan, it was exciting to see another side of the world and to learn how they do things there. “We met a lot of new people and it was just one wonderful tour,” he said.

Some of the other players said the girls there are very good looking! Apart from training and matches, the boys also had leisure time to explore Dublin, Cliffs of Moher, Cork City Gaol and other amazing places. “Most of all we had a lot of fun,” they all said. They returned home on October 6.

The school is very proud of these boys and wish them all the best for their futures.
