Water shortage, yet being wasted everywhere

I am writing this letter after years of struggles to get a leaking water pipe fixed, but to no avail, and with our current water crisis, this is especially unacceptable.

The connection (pipe) was done three years ago, but when they went they just left the pipe leaking and held it down with a rock. We have been complaining for at least two years and eventually gave up. Now with the water shortage, however, we have started complaining again because our water is precious. Anyone who walks there stops for a drink or a shower. That is fine, but they can’t close the pipe and swamps form.

Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) commented by saying: “The City of Ekurhuleni is implementing measures to decrease the amount of water lost due to burst pipes and leaks. The turnaround time has been reduced from 48 hours to six hours. This means that within six hours of a complaint being reported, it should be attended to before repair works are carried out.

“The municipality is prioritising shutting off the water supply as soon as a burst pipe is reported to prevent water loss.

A team of technicians has been deployed to speedily clear the backlog of water meter leaks.

The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to thank residents for playing an important role of reporting services interruptions, as every drop counts.”
