Vital need for Alberton’s school for autism supported

The I AM School for Autism held a fundraiser, as their running costs are extremely high, on Saturday October 22.
Guests were treated to a delicious dinner and some entertainment at the Reading Country Club, with the theme of ‘Glitz and Glamour’.
Live performances by Blue Suede Heaven (an Elvis Presley tribute group) and Shades of Grey had people tapping their feet to some golden oldies music. Fun was had with a photo booth, giving people an opportunity to be a bit silly.
Speeches were delivered by one of the owners of the school (and mother to one of the learners), Bronwyn Sharrock, plus by her husband Cuen Sharrock. The MC for the night, York Zucchi, thanked everyone for being there and shed some light on the intricacies, difficulties, challenges and astronomical expense of running a school of this sort.
It’s estimated that six times as many resources are required for a school of this sort, compared to conventional schools.
After discovering that there was no school or facility nearby that they could take their kids – who both have autism – to, Celeste Viljoen and Bronwyn Sharrock opened the I AM School for Autism in Alberton at the beginning of 2016.
“We wanted to have a place that kids with autism in the area, could come to and make it affordable too; as some other schools (all far away) can cost around R12 000-R15 000 per month,” said the founders.
The evening was a great success and shows yet again that people within the community, love to help when a worthy cause presents itself.
For anyone who would like to contribute, has a child with autism, or for more information on the school, please contact Bronwyn Sharrock 072 756 5005 or Celeste Viljoen 083 964 2020.
