Young Lions takes full honours

The GLRU u.19 and u.21 teams won their respective SA Rugby championships.

THE Golden Lions u.21 and u.19 teams won their respective national age group finals, which took place as curtain-raisers to the Currie Cup final at Bloemfontein’s Toyota Stadium on Saturday October 15.

In SA Rugby’s u.21 Championship, the Golden Lions and Western Province were involved in a tight tussle as both sides tried hard to make their presence felt on attack – and put their bodies on the line on defence. That resulted in the Johannesburg side securing a nail-biting 38-34 victory.

The Golden Lions u.19 team meanwhile, were in fine form against Western Province as they applied pressure on attack from start to end, backing that up with innovative running lines and impressive finishing for their 60-19 victory. So effective was the Lions attack, they ran in an impressive eight tries to only three by the Cape side.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union held a function for the two sides at Emirates Airlines Park to celebrate their victories.
