Four weeks to Christmas…and counting! Shops are aglow with tinsel and glitter, and all things beautiful. And yes, I’ve managed to find quite a lot of Christmas gifts for under R100.
There are gift ideas for everyone, from young to old and if you start now you’ll be able to shop wisely and not end up spending too much money. Clicks and DisChem have some great gifts which won’t break the bank, but still, for me, you just can’t beat Woolworths. All their gift lines are packaged beautifully as well as biscuits and chocolates.
Food hamper
I always like this idea and especially for granny and grandpa, or those who have everything, make up a food hamper. Buy a basket (size depending on how much you want to buy) or find a strong box and cover with Christmas gift wrap. Choose tinned items which they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves as well as luxury biscuits, wine, savoury biscuits, conserves, chocolates, coffee (instant, ground or beans), miniature bottles of their favourite tipple, biltong, bottle of port or sherry, and maybe add a pretty towel to finish it off. Add all the items and then wrap in cellophane (red, green or gold) and tie with a ribbon. It will look really good and I’m sure they’ll appreciate your thoughtfulness. Also it’s something which can be used, not just something shoved to the back of a cupboard.
Christmas crackers
I’ve been sourcing Christmas crackers and you won’t get much for under R70. To make your own can work out cheaper but if you aren’t creative it will probably be a nightmare! I’ve decided to make crackers for the adults but bought for the younger children. My homemade crackers don’t have a ‘bang’ and children love this the most, that and the cheap gift and paper hat inside. One year I decided to buy the snapper and one of the children burnt one of their fingers from a spark, so I decided never again! If you wish to make crackers, use toilet roll inners, fill with chocolates or tiny gifts if you can find some, and cover in sparkly Christmas paper, tying each end with silver or gold ribbon. They do look lovely and also can make a centrepiece for your table. Fill a huge glass jar or bowl with all the crackers and only open at the end of the meal.
That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
