Elder targeted by scammers

He ran up and down the store for quite a while trying to get other people to buy his groceries, before he disappeared.

IN reply to to “Scammers strike again” (previous story in the Alberton Record):

I was shopping at Pick n Pay in New Redruth, when someone almost knocked my handbag off my arm.

I turned around to see who it was and saw a young man running to the washing powder and taking some off the shelf.

I went down another aisle and, next thing I knew, he was next to me and handed me a shopping list of many different items and asked me to buy them for him. I explained to him that I am a pensioner and could not do this.

He ran up and down the store for quite a while, trying to get other people to buy his groceries, before he disappeared.
As I was leaving, I asked the security lady at the door why we have to be harassed by these people while we are shopping, and she said she saw him leave the shop.

We have the same problem at every robot and stop street and, when you ignore them, they become abusive, like one day when one of them swore at my husband.

We can hardly support ourselves as my husband and I are in our 70s and they say charity begins at home.

THE RECORD spoke to the manager of the store in question (who wishes not to be named) and he was not aware of the incident.

“I am always made aware of this type of thing if my security guards were made aware of it. I suspect this person must have told a guard from the centre, they often hang around our entrance,” says the manager. “We do not judge people on appearance and we do not bar anyone from entering our store,” he adds.
