Varsity Cup almost here – win tickets watch the matches

Win tickets to watch Varsity Cup at Wits and UJ this coming Monday.

INTO its 10th year, Varsity Cup Rugby is still going strong and the university teams are ready to do battle on the field.

The 2017 edition of the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International, gets underway on Monday, January 30.

The University of Witwatersrand will be playing in the Varsity Cup for the first time. Wits will kick-off their venture against the University of the Free State’s Shimlas on Monday January 30, at Wits Stadium at 16:45.

In their opening encounter, University of Johannesburg will take on the current champions, NWU-Potchefstroom’s Pukke, at UJ stadium also on Monday January 30 at 19:00. The second round of matches will be played on the following Monday: February 6.

“The excitement of the tenth season is tangible amongst universities,” said Varsity Cup CEO, Duitser Bosman, “Varsity Cup understands the challenges that the universities are facing across the country. Contingency measures have been put in place by each university, after lengthy discussions with each vice chancellor. The universities have been very helpful and accommodating.”

The addition of a ninth university, FNB Wits, sees the 2017 tournament kicking off a bit earlier than in previous years.

Three universities, namely FNB UCT, FNB Madibaz and FNB UP-Tuks, will have alternative venues for their opening matches. UP-Tuks will be playing their opening match against FNB Maties at Loftus Versveld, due to the former’s field being used as a student registration location. UCT will be playing their first game at Florida Park in Ravensmead, as exams will be taking place in the UCT Sports Hall – which is located right next to the rugby field. The NMMU Stadium is being upgraded and as a result, FNB Madibaz will be playing all their matches away.

This premier rugby competition is proudly sponsored by FNB, Steinhoff International and Steers.
