Mass Ride cyclists multiply
There was a contagious sense of cheer in the air as all the cyclists took off into the street at 7:30pm.
THE Alberton Mass Ride united hundreds of fun-loving cyclists at New Redruth Village on Friday evening, May 5. This gathering takes place on the first Friday of every month, and so far, more and more people have been joining it.
The RECORD spoke to a few people who have joined the Mass Ride only very recently. These include the trio of Craig Forrester, Garreth Peeters and Haneke Dreyer, as well as the Buys family – a family of four who joined the mass ride to spend quality time together.
Garreth and Haneke are engaged, and committed to the Mass Ride, along with Craig, around a month ago. They enjoy the unique ‘vibe’ of the event, and getting out and socialising. They say that the cycling itself is not the highlight for them – they admit that they haven’t been riding bikes for very long. However, enjoying a beer together, the fresh air on their faces and being part of this ‘family’ is what really counts for them.
The Buys family – Johan, Clare, Caiden and Joshua – also joined the Mass Ride a mere month ago. Caiden and Joshua are the young children of Johan and Clare. This lovely family enjoys the quality time that they get to spend together when they go to the Mass Ride, and don’t take the cycling itself too seriously. “We joined to get out together more,” says Clare. “The kids cycle with us instead of playing video games or watching TV, which is good for them.”

It was clear that the number of cyclists has multiplied since the last time the RECORD visited the event in March. There were easily a few hundred people waiting to take off. Once again, many bikes were decorated with multi-coloured lights and rigged out with booming speakers. There was a contagious sense of cheer in the air as all the cyclists took off into the street at 7:30pm. Motorists even waved and smiled at them as they waited for everyone to cross the street.

Feel free to join the club – all you have to do is show up! The next Mass Ride gathering will take place on June 2 at New Redruth Village. Be there before 19:30. For any other questions regarding th e Alberton Mass Ride, feel free to contact Arno on 082 639 2362.
