Councillors must assist clean up Alberton

Residents must stand together and put pressure on councillors to act.

I moved out of Alberton North two years ago, after selling my house.

I went back to the area over the weekend and was thoroughly disgusted to see how dirty the town in the older part of Alberton had become.

The roads have litter everywhere and cars are parked on the pavements. Everything is dirty no matter where you look.

Beggars are seen kneeling at traffic lights and I just wonder how motorist manage to avoid knocking them over.

When I went to Springbok Pharmacy I was horrified to see nothing but filth and dirt – discarded half-eaten food, boxes, and endless papers. Vendors in the parking area are forever ‘in your face’ trying to sell their wares. Then there are children begging for donations and poorer people asking for food. Inside the centre things are clean – but one sure has to be very vigilant whilst walking from one’s car to the building.

How is it possible for such a once-well-kept town to go downhill so fast?

The residents of Alberton should call their ward councillors, and bring it to their attention that the area is not being maintained by the municipality.

I honestly think the councillors need to become more active and “fight” for what is supposed to be done in the area they are responsible for. After all, that is why they stand for election and why they get paid .

Leaving things as they are will just cause the situation to get worse, and soon it will be too difficult to reign everything back in to an acceptable standard.

It is such a pity that the town is slowly slipping away, but what worries me the most, is the fact that people don’t seem to be too disturbed by it.

Alberton, you need to stand together and insist the municipality cleans up the area!

I can only say that it is very sad to see such decline.
