I would like to use this letter to keep readers informed about the proposed retirement village development in South Crest.
The application for township establishment on portion 670 of the farm Elandsfontein (South Crest ext 5), was for a retirement village, residential buildings (four storeys and six storeys high), dwelling units and church and related offices with a density of not more than 566 units.
In my opinion, the application was flawed or, at best, incomplete since it did not include an environmental impact assessment or a traffic impact study. These studies are of the utmost importance for any development.
These studies should have been considered crucial especially since this area is environmentally sensitive and that Vlei Street, which would have led from the development to Voortrekker Street, is extremely narrow and already has all the traffic from Eeuwfees Street.
Other issues of water and sanitation services were also of great concern to all.
At a Neighbourhood Watch meeting on June 14, in South Crest, I was very pleased to inform residents that objections raised by myself, as the ward councillor, with the participation of concerned members of the community who sent in over 200 letters of objection, have succeeded in getting the developers to re-think their original plan.
There were certain approvals given in the 1990’s, but I believe it was for residential one development.
If and when the new application is submitted, I shall keep the residents informed.
In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone who assisted in any way for their efforts and support.
Alderman Bruna Haipel, ward 106 councillor
