Thank you to the all the Southerners

We, and so many here in the South, are so proud of Southern COURIER’S initiative and drive - Jerry Theys

The fierce storms and the icy cold wet weather that gripped the Western Cape, claimed many lives and left many homeless.

The raging, intense and uncontrollable fire consuming large parts of Knysna caused many people to lose their lives and thousands were forced to evacuate their homes while hundreds of houses were gutted – many beyond repair.

Many South Africans were stunned and shocked by the news that a natural devastation of such magnitude could be experienced within our borders. Not in our lifetime has our country ever seen such fierce catastrophes as those in the Western Cape and Knysna.

In Gauteng, we were faced with bitterly cold weather. While we were shivering and tried to keep ourselves warm, a group of people were concerned and worried about the thousands of people who had been left homeless and were struggling to survive without electricity and water.

This is when Southern COURIER Editor, Carina van der Walt and the staff of Southern COURIER, appealed to the communities of the South to donate whatever they could toward the Knysna Relief Effort.

They appealed to business organisations, churches, schools, housewives, learners and many others from the South, to heed the call for help. According to Carina van der Walt, the response was overwhelming. She said she and staff were stunned and humbled by the community’s selfless reaction.

“We, and so many here in the South, are equally proud of Southern COURIER’S initiative and drive, as well of those who made an effort to help our fellow South Africans. We wish to express our deep-felt thanks and appreciation to those who gave so selflessly to lessen the suffering of others. You’ve made us proud. Always remember: It is by giving that you receive.
