JHB Police too strong for Alberton

Alberton will play their last match this weekend.

A SQUARE Forklift Alberton rugby team knew it would be a challenge facing off with the Bobbies outfit, as most of their sides are in the running for the semi-finals in two weeks’ time, as are the Alberton sides.

Due to Johannesburg Police fields being used for Walk the Talk, they requested for the fixtures to be hosted at Pirates Rugby Club.

The First XV was once again hindered with an injury just moments to kick-off, with the huge Theuns van der Merwe withdrawing due to a slight niggle.

The coaching staff drew 19-year-old Caltino Jones into the side.

The first half was tightly contested, with an eight-all score line, due to a penalty from Henry Payne and a try from Jones after capitalising on the Bobbies’ mistake.

The second half was much more entertaining, with a converted try from Alberton’s mercurial fullback Jonothan Reed.

Moments before the end whistle, replacement Jacques van Wyk did his best by busting through the Bobbies’ defensive line and offloading to Jones, who went over in the corner, bringing the score line to 21-22 in favour of the hosts, with the conversion to come.

With the missed conversion, the Bobbies went into the dying moments with a one-point lead.

They somehow managed to gather the ball from the kick-off and slotted a drop goal.

The final score was 25-21 to JHB Police.

This is the second time the Bobbies managed to beat the Alberton side.

With the current log standings it seems Alberton will face the Police side one more time this season.

If Alberton can be more accurate with the boot, it could be the difference between winning and losing.
