Ward councillor on problems at Silwerkroon

I will keep on putting pressure on the department to expedite the repairs.

THE article in the Alberton Record “Elderly must use stairs” on August 2, refers.

As ward councillor for the area where Silwerkroon Old Age Home is situated, I have on many occasions reported maintenance problems to the Human Settlement Department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM).

The lift is an ongoing concern which has been repaired many times but now needs to be replaced.

The metro’s reaction to maintenance requests is invariably slow and definitely not proactive.

The information and apologies posted on the lift door by the council are a step in the right direction, however the excuse that the “item” did not go to the BID committee in time and all the delays in appointing contractors, going out to tender, etc, etc does not hold water, it just shows the level of inefficiency.

Delays and procrastination are the downfalls of this ANC run metro. We are continually pointing out that all tenders and contracts should be ready and put into action months before the end of the financial year so as to be ready by July 1 when the new financial year begins. This does not often happen and residents and ratepayers must bear the consequences of these delays.

I will keep on putting pressure on the department to expedite the repairs.

RECORD has contacted the EMM for comment, but have received none at the time of going to print.
