Lerena wins Heritage Day in style
World Sports Betting Grand Heritage day featured 27 horses.
GAVIN Lerena and Forest Fox worked hard to clock in a win over Classify with Fanie Herholdt on his back for the Grand Heritage Day race.
The main feature race saw 27 horses charging down the 1 475m straight at the World Sports Betting Grand Heritage Day race on September 30 at Vaal Racecourse.
Lerena produced the magic to win the second edition of the R750 000 Non-Black Type event winning the inaugural race in 2016 on Irish Pride. Trainer Paul Peter, who had a good day at the races on Saturday, had Forest Fox in perfect racing condition and with former Champion Jockey of the Year, Lerena, putting up a sterling performance on the day. It proofed to be a winning combination.

The 32-year old jockey positioned Forest Fox well in the middle and went for the kill some 200m from the finishing line to clock in with a time of 88.03 seconds.
“I had him, Forest Fox, switched off and in a rhythm following behind Classify the whole way through until the 700m mark and then went for the win. Classify came right back to challenge us but Forest Fox was not throwing this one away and he dug deep,” said Lerena.

Dorrie Sham’s Classify ran in second place and will most probably be one of the horses to beat in this year’s Summer Cup on November 25 at Turffontein Racecourse.
Geoff Woodruff trained Starret City with jockey Collen Storey and came in third and earned R65 000. The World Sports Betting Heritage Day was attended by a full house at Vaal racecourse and marks the beginning of the Highveld season. The next big race day coming up will be on November 4 at Turffontein Racecourse.
