It’s all Dusi training now

Dusi training begins in earnest.

FLORIDA Lake canoe club hosted a Dusi seeding and training race on the Klip River from Daleside to Meyerton on December 10. The race involved 30km of paddling with two 2km portages where the paddlers ran with their boats.

With more than 100 entries, it was the best supported local river race in months, as paddlers stepped up their preparations for the FNB Dusi – the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event – which takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in February.

The heavy storms and rainfall of the past couple of weeks meant the water level on the river was high, fast and furious – conditions which were thoroughly enjoyed by the experienced paddlers.

Brothers Andrew and Stuart Fraser from the Wemmer Pan-based Johannesburg Canoe Club were among those who kick-started their Dusi training at Sunday’s race. The duo finished in 2:23 as the 11th double, and are looking forward to a fantastic Dusi race next year.
