Stride into big win

The first leg of the Triple Crown was held at the Turffontein racecourse.

MONKS Hood kept his pace and stride through the winning post to record a big win at the Gauteng Guineas on March 3 at Turffontein racecourse.

The first leg of the Triple Tiara, which included the R1-million Gauteng Guineas, was held on Saturday where Anthony Delpech on Monks Hood took apart the full field of some outstanding racing by the opposition. The two cruised past the post winning by 5.50-length in the R1-m Gauteng Guineas over 1 600m. In second place was Surcharge, Royal Crusade came in third place.

Trainer Alistair Gordon said that Delpech handled Monks Hood well over the distance and he is very proud to record this win. However, he said that he will go over the 1 800m during the SA Classic, which will take place on April 7 at the Turffontein racecourse. Thus there might not be a Triple Crown winner in 2018.

“It’s up to the owner, Mary Slack, but I wouldn’t run him in the SA Classic next month,” said Gordon.

The Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas over 1 600m was won by Takingthepeace, ridden by Callan Murray assistant trained by Mathew de Kock, son of the well-known trainer, Mike de Kock.

“She should stay all three distances to be able to claim the Triple Tiara,” said De Kock.

In the meantime, the Turffontein racecourse is preparing for the second leg of the SA Classic Day on April 7. The R2-m Classic SA Triple Crown will take place as well as the R1-m Wilgebosdrift SA Fillies Classic.
