I work in Alberton North for a logistics company.
Our camp is based close to the squatter camps. On June 6, in the evening, a driver was sitting inside his truck when the squatters opened his door and demanded him to hand over his wallet, phones and other belongings.
He told them that he didn’t have anything with him. They grabbed his wallet and took his R50. Thereafter they shot at him – luckily the bullets missed him.
They are also stealing batteries from trucks that are stuck waiting for diesel. They have stabbed another driver that had parked his truck and luckily he managed to drive into our yard bleeding so badly. There was blood all over. He survived though.
This morning, October 15, between 4.30am and 5am, our truck driver was opening his container lock at our gate. A guy hid behind the truck, grabbed him and told him to give him money. The driver said the man was armed with a big knife. The thug quickly got inside the truck and took about R3 000 and jumped out using the passenger door.
This is not nice. I question our safety in these Alberton streets. I believe Alberton is very safe but these informal settlements (squatters camps) are very dangerous and are polluting Alberton with drugs.
Something needs to be done about this. I am trying to get photos of the culprit that stole the driver’s R3 000 from the truck’s front camera and a case was also opened with the police.
