Discipline and confidence through training at Valhalla

Valhalla MMA and Fitness is expanding to teach more people the discipline and confidence that comes with their training.

VALHALLA MMA and Fitness, located on Charl Cilliers Avenue, is a martial arts-based fitness club providing a place for young and old to train for fitness and discipline.

Valhalla MMA forms a part of the Gracie Barra group and as such their style of martial arts is founded upon Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Members from Valhalla MMA compete and train within the styles of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, no-gi grappling and mixed martial arts. The instructors at Valhalla are ICP 6 qualified and in their history as a club have excelled in competing and have taking many medals and trophies home.

Little Vikings

Valhalla provides training classes and competition opportunities to people of all ages. In particular, their Little Vikings class focuses on younger children and teaching them the basics of the sport and the lifestyle.

The RECORD spoke to owner and founder Shane van Zyl about the value and importance of children participating in training.

According to Shane, the discipline that comes from the training is a positive factor for the development of the young children. Shane spoke about children with attention problems being much more focused after some time training at the club.

“The training gives the students a lot of confidence,” said Shane. He says that the confidence is a major deterrent to bullying in schools, with success stories he shared with the RECORD of children no longer feeling the effects of bullying after gaining the confidence from their training.

Support upcoming stars

Valhalla has in the past, and still does, support young athletes who are interested in the sport but unable to afford to take part by giving them the opportunity to train and compete at the club.

Shane told the RECORD this is something that he wishes the club could do more often, but due to the reality of financial constraints the club is unable to sponsor everyone.

The club would like to take on more of these potential star athletes should someone be willing to sponsor them. Valhalla is, however, in the process of extending the club premises, not only allowing for more classes to be hosted simultaneously, but providing more room for more students.

A dream Shane has for the club should more funds become available, is to have permanent instructors that can visit schools and less fortunate areas to give the people there a demonstration, and teach the values of the sport which is his passion.

To help ensure that the club grows, reaches more people and changes more lives, the club is currently looking for people willing to sponsor the club. Should you be willing to make a contribution feel free to contact Shane on 073 184 5861 or send him an email at info@valhallammasa.co.za
