Alberton Madalas stunned by Tendellas in thrilling Golden Oldies encounter
Tendallas were hungry for a rare win against the Madalas and scored five tries to seal a well-deserved victory.
ALBERTON Madalas suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Tendellas in a thrilling match played as part of the Benoni Grizzlies festival at the grounds of Hans Moore in Benoni recently.
It was a very good game although the Madalas were uncharacteristically out of form. They made a lot of mistakes on attack by knocking on a few balls, especially in the backline.
Even when they created an overlap the final pass was just going astray.
Tendellas sized the opportunity to put extra pressure on the Madalas and thus had the better of territory and possession in the game.
Again, however, the defensive effort of the Madalas cannot be faulted. They are a team that prides themselves on putting in 100 per cent always.
With all the quality ball that the Tendellas had one might have expected a different scoreline.
Jason ‘Stretch’ Waldeck opened up the scoring for his team when he powered his way over the line after the Madalas set up multiple phases. Anton ‘LT’ Killian again got his name on the score sheet as well as Dries Steenkamp.
But the Tendallas were hungry for a rare win against the Madalas and scored five tries to seal a well-deserved victory with the final score 5-3.
The Legends also showed a lot of character by drawing with Diggers in the last game of the day with the end score three all.
As part of the festival the crowd were treated to the game between the Kaas team and the Wyn team.
This is a new initiative from the Golden Lions Golden Oldies where the teams are made up of players that are over 50.
Some of these players are new to the game while others have not played competitively for a number of years. But the Lions are trying to get more and more players involved in the game for longer. It was a lot of fun – if not tiring.
A great initiative and something that will be expanded on as well as becoming a regular part of the festivals.
The camaraderie in these teams is unrivalled. If anyone would like to join they are more than welcome to phone Joe ‘Trashman’ Steyn on 0769424863.
Well done to the Madalas again. You may not have won this time but make us proud you certainly did.
