Lerena prepares to defend his title

Kevin Lerena will defend his IBO belt against Vasil Ducar from the Czech Republic.

THE bulky boxer from the Smith gymnasium, Kevin Lerena, who boasts the world number one cruiserweight position, will defend his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) belt against Vasil Ducar from the Czech Republic.

Lerena will have to watch his step in the ring because Ducar is a well-recognised martial arts and kick-boxing fundi who has fought 80 bouts as an amateur in this sporting code.

MMA fighters can move around in the ring and use whichever leading leg they prefer to attack their opponent.

Lerena and Ducar will meet in the ring during the boxing tournament on June 8 at Emperors Palace, presented by Golden Gloves Promotions.

“I am prepared to defend my title against anyone who is in front of me in the ring. We will have our preparations for this fight and it doesn’t matter from which stance he is fighting, I will take him on. It is going to be exciting to fight Ducar,” said Lerena.

“I urge my fans to come out and watch this fight. I am growing as a boxer and have learnt a lot in the ring to overcome any kind of method to dethrone me.”

Lerena said boxing in South Africa has grown by leaps and bounds and that it is time for the fans to come and watch live boxing and support their boxer.

“We always need your support when we are out there in the ring and it helps if your fans are behind you if it is a difficult fight.”

Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman said he will warn Lerena to be on his feet during the fighting.

“These European guys, especially those fighting in heavy divisions, know how to fight,” he said.

Though Ducar’s record in the boxing ring is somewhat slim, eight fights with seven wins, the 29-year-old has remarkable power, winning his fights by KOs. He has knocked out six of his opponents with his powerful punches.

Lerena has just come off a win where he demolished Artur Mann from Germany in the fourth round to retain the IBO cruiserweight title.
