Emirates Lions open their hearts with a house party for CHOC
Emirates Lions took a day out of their Vodacom Super Rugby week to visit the patients of CHOC.
At the peak of the Vodacom Super Rugby season, a week can fly by in a blur of matches, training and other commitments. But for the children fighting a daily battle with cancer, a week in a hospital ward can feel like a lifetime. And for some, that hospital ward has become their second home.
So, on May 22, the Emirates Lions took a day out of their Vodacom Super Rugby week to remind the patients of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation Gauteng South region what home is really like when they gave them a house party to remember.
As part of this season’s #TacklingCancer campaign, the Lions teamed up with Vodacom to host the children and their families, their caregivers and medical staff and CHOC volunteers at an exclusive house party at Saxonwold House in Johannesburg.
Children from CHOC facilities in Saxonwold and Diepkloof in Soweto were treated to a day of Marvel gifts and goody bags handed to them by their favourite Lions players, fun activities on giant inflatables, as much popcorn and ice cream as they can eat, and a selfie booth to capture their favourite moments.
The Diepkloof CHOC house was also presented with a double-door fridge for their facility.
The CHOC House Party is another element of a commitment by South Africa’s Vodacom Super Rugby teams to tackle cancer in every possible way this season.
Off the field, all the South African Vodacom Super Rugby teams are joining the Lions in hosting similar events for the CHOC children in their regions. And on the field, the South African players know every tackle they make this season results in R100, jointly donated by Vodacom and SuperSport, to CHOC in support of these children and their battle to overcome cancer. Their aim is to raise R1-million by the end of the season.
