Dangerous and shoddy workmanship

Residents are complaining about the dangerous trench in Brackenhurst and hope that it will be fixed soon.

On Monday November 18 an electrical sub-contractor, who I presume was working on behalf of the council, dug a trench on my pavement, with the possible intention of connecting one working street light to another non-working one across the road, which has not worked for quite some time.

This deep trench is located on either side of a very busy intersection, namely the corner of Camellia and Jasmine streets in Brackenhurst. As can be seen from the attached photograph, the pedestrian walkway was also dug up in the process, leaving a very deep unmarked trench, into which someone is due to fall.

Not long after the trench was dug (and since left unattended), the contractor had a brilliant plan to run an overhead cable from the working streetlight to the non-working one. Great for him because this temporary eyesore, immediately sorted his problem out – but left the dangerous trench with rubble on either side of the stop street, which is actually the main pedestrian pavement and bicycle path to Brackenhurst Primary School.

I cannot believe that this dangerous eyesore has been left unattended in this state, and even with repeated calls to the council, absolutely nothing has been done about it. I’m waiting for some unfortunate motorist to damage their vehicle, or some poor pedestrian to fall into this trench and injure themselves, before any action is taken.

Councillor Estelle Visser has reported the matter and asked that the hole be fixed and filled as soon as possible.
