Varsity Football to commence today
CUT is back in the competition after a two-year absence, and their first game will be against Johannesburg-giants UJ at the CUT Stadium today.
The newly-added Central University of Technology (CUT) has their sights firmly set on winning their first ever Varsity Football title, beginning with a victory over the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
CUT are back in the competition after a two-year absence, and their first game will be against Johannesburg-giants UJ at the CUT Stadium today.
Overcoming the Orange Army will be no easy feat with UJ making the semi-finals last season and topping the points table. UJ skipper Sphesihle Mbhele has made it clear they want to build on last season’s momentum.
“The goal is to win the first game and take it one game at a time but not taking our eyes off the prize. We are looking to go all the way.”
“This season our team is fairly new and is a younger team but with that being said, the plan is to top the table again and go a couple steps further to win the tournament this time around.”
The men in baby blue have a solid record to build off going into 2019. They played in 2016 and 2017, and out of their 14 fixtures CUT won seven, drew three and lost four games. CUT captain Ernest Mabathoana believes that the pre-season has gone well for his charges and they are ready for the first round.
“The boys are ready and are looking forward to the first round of the 2019 Varsity Football. The mood is very positive as we did everything thoroughly to prepare for this year’s Varsity Football. Therefore we believe as a team that things will go according to plan.”
Mabathoana explained that having their first game at home is a massive advantage.
“The home ground advantage is very important for us in terms of our supporters coming in numbers and cheering us on. “We are aware that 12th man is our supporters and can also help us in achieving our goal.
“We also wouldn’t want to lose a game on our home soil as it is a place we would always want to collect maximum points since we are familiar with the environment.”
CUT will host UJ at the CUT Stadium at 6.30pm on Thursday evening. Buy your tickets at https://varsitysportssa.com/
