GALLERY: UJ put 2018 hurt behind them to claim 2019 Varsity 7s title
UJ has won their second Varsity 7s title in three years.
UJ has won their second Varsity 7s title in three years, and made up for heartbreak in the 2018 final, by beating Maties 20-0 in the showpiece match on October 5.
UJ was handicapped early on when one of their players got sin-binned and Maties were preying for an opportunity to pounce.
However, it was the Orange Army who, despite being a man down, scored thanks to Musawenkosi Tshabalala running 70m to score the first try of the final.
The power play, which has proven effective throughout the tournament, saw UJ score a 10-point try and lead 15-0 at half-time.
At that stage the Orange Army was seven minutes away from the 2019 title, but Maties were not going to give them the title that easily.
Try as they may, Maties just couldn’t crack the UJ defence and with the clock ticking down UJ was well on the way for a win.
Odwa Nkunjana duly side-stepped three Maties players in arguably the try of the tournament to put UJ firmly in charge with the trophy due to travel with them across town to Auckland Park.
