Yet another year will soon come to an end and we thought of listing all of the sporting highlights of 2019.
January
• Former Reiger Park Springbok prop Lawrence Sephaka was appointed as the new chairperson of A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club.
February
• Former Alberton swimmer Chad Gifford (47) of Umzumbe completed the 16 Mile during the Midmar Mile weekend, something only 14 swimmers took on this year.
• Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School ended third during their inter-athletic event on February 8.
• The Alberton Madalas Golden Oldies Rugby Club had a great start to the year at their first festival played at Diggers on February 9, where they won 5-3.
March
• Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School hosted Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom on February 23 with both schools playing some entertaining rugby, and both teams making some early season mistakes. They won all the A-team matches – u-14A won 27-0, u-15A won 31-11 and u-16A won 27-07. The u-14A and u-15A teams were difficult to judge as they are still trying to overcome the primary school ‘type’ of rugby, where the big boys take every ball up, trying to smash their opponent’s defence into submission.
• Alberton Cricket Club start off the year in fine style with a 167 run win over Actonville from Benoni.
• Hoërskool Dinamika starts off Super Series with wins against Hoërskool Brandwag.
• Laerskool President Steyn’s u-10A and u-10B netball teams won the Super series.
April
•Shield Sbonis’iDiski football development programme was launched at Alberton Football Club on April 6. The Shield Sbonis’iDiski football development programme scouts young soccer players from 10 sectors across the country to have the opportunity of a lifetime.
September
• Ricardo Malajika won the Gauteng Junior bantamweight title. In September, he didn’t hesitate to show his newfound prowess by demolishing Layten Gloss at the Razor Sharp Boxing Tournament.
• The Spidertech Inter-Provincial Rugby Tournament was held at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School. In the top u-18 tournament in the boys’ division. The Valke were the top team and in the girls’ tournament the Golden Lions side took the win.
October
• Helalia Johannes from Namibia was the winner of the SPAR Women’s Challenge 10km. She finished the race in a time of 33:16.
• Tenshinkan karatekas from the Alberview Club visted Japan to train under the founder of the style, kancho Mamoru Miwa. The karatekas graded for various grades of black while in Japan.
November
• The Charity Mile took place at Turffontein Racecourse. The race drew a field of the country’s top race horses who were paired with 16 celebrities standing for 16 charities.
• The PPS Alberton Road Race hosted by Alberton Athletic Club was a huge success despite less than ideal weather. This year the proceeds of the fun run was donated to Amcare.
December
• The Summer Cup took place at Turffontein Racecourse. Trainers Sean Tarry and Mike de Kock dominated the proceedings.
