The Bag Lady

We’re half way through winter and I can’t believe it’s July! My mind can’t quite get around it and the year is positively flying.

It’s also school holidays and I’ve noticed a few frazzled mom’s and grannies at the shops. Still two weeks to go, so try and find a few things to keep them occupied. Movies are always a great idea but it can be costly, especially if the little darlings want popcorn and those slushy things they seem to love!

My children were taken first to Clicks and allowed to choose two items, chocolates or crisps, as long as whatever they chose could fit in my handbag and were easily concealed! I was brought up to obey the law, umph, and in my days you couldn’t take your own eat’s and drinks to the “pictures” as we called it then. The last time I was at the movies I was startled to see just how much movie goers munch, crunch and slurp while watching a film. In fact, it was more a case of having a picnic than watching the movie. Weird!

Another idea for younger children is a day out at Johannesburg Zoo. It used to be quite reasonable and you could take a picnic along. Locally, we have Rietvlei Zoo, which offers quite a few fun things to do.

Or, how about Gold Reef City Theme Park? They are offering “Ride the Weather” promotion which runs from July 23 to August 31. Check out the entertainment pages  to see what’s going on.

Time to relax

chestnust tree (Custom) Well-loved author Maeve Binchy’s books still live on and the latest, Chestnut Street, is about thirty small houses in a semicircle in Dublin, which are inhabited by scores of fascinating human beings, who figure in these stories, written by her between novels. Now, after her death in 2012 at 72, they are finally being published. Sounds great and just the book to curl up with on a chilly day. Available at The Glen Exclusive Books.
