Sewage concerns: EMM responds

ANSWERS: EMM answers residents' and business owners' nagging concerns

A NUMBER of complaints were lodged regarding several sewage problems in various areas and published in last week’s issue of the RECORD.

EMM dealt with the following issues:

Villa Daniella

“The main sewer that runs through Villa Daniella to stand 2258, crosses the highway to connect to the Randhart system: while developing stand 2258, the developers did local filling of about three meters on top of the natural ground level over the main sewer and manholes. It also seems that the sewer line was redirected without Council’s knowledge, before the filling without manholes. Previously we managed to open the line with a Jet truck but since about mid-June, we could not open it and are busy with excavations to determine the position and problem on the line.”

Alrode business complaints

“Sewer blockage was opened at stand 160 Alrode South with a Jet truck, after challenges to get access to the stand opposite the road where the blockage was.”

The sewage overflow in the wetland between Brackenhurst/Brackendowns

“The description is not clear enough but the area was inspected and possible blockage in the area of Vaal Street was found and rectified.”

With regards to the overdevelopment in certain areas as a possible cause of sewage spills and overflows in the Alberton area’s, EMM had this to say:

“Sewer system capacity is tested before any new development is considered. There is no serious capacity problems in the Alberton area because of developments approved. No upgrading is necessary if there is sufficient capacity in the system.”
