ALBERTON – I feel that it is a major danger and risk to motorists and the beggars themselves.
The way they stay in the street while the robots are green and vehicles travelling up and down Michelle Avenue is an accident waiting to happen. There is not enough space for the cars in all the lanes and the beggars on the street between lanes. I have witnessed a case where they were fighting throwing rocks or bricks at each other.
I noticed some time ago that the EMPD ‘removed’ a person at the Michelle off-ramp selling carpets, and made sure he did not return, but where there is a real danger they seem to ignore it?
They also have their speed cameras up and down Michelle Avenue, but 40 meters from where they stand they ignore the beggars, which is against the law and a danger.
If one travels from the top of Michelle Avenue towards the highway, and you have to swerve at the intersection for any unforeseen reason, it will most probably result in hitting one of the beggars. I have seen this happen before, and the beggar managed to jump out the way at the last second.
They harass and try to intimidate the females drivers, and often pretend that something is wrong with their car in order to get them to open their window.
I have seen them there at 7:00 at the intersection around December 16. Which makes one wonder what are they doing there the morning when most people are leaving on holiday?
I know people who have taken some of them to shelters, but they keep coming back. I believe it is because no one makes the effort to remove them and keep them away.
Surely the EMPD/SAPS can assist?
I do not see why one must wait for a very serious accident to happen before action is taken.
