Third world slum awaits us

There is but one good, however unfortunately harsh, word to describe Alberton and the situation developing in Alberton North.

ALBERTON – One of the main reasons for this is the number of bars and liquor stores in close proximity to each other in the area, and the new gambling den of which the owner even tried to ‘steal’ four parking bays from Alberton residents for his ‘business’.

There are nine liquor outlets in an area of approximately 1 km², all within approximately one kilometer from our once proud Town Hall. They do not adhere to the laws. I have personally, in my own capacity, seen them selling illegal alcohol in plastic bags. Hours of trade is not a consideration and they stay open as long as it suits them.

At night we are starting to see the early signs of prostitution: young girls roaming the street corners of Alberton North.

But who are to blame for this situation? It is my opinion that all well-established businesses in Alberton North, all the churches in Alberton, and each and every member of the public in Alberton North, Florentia and surrounding areas are to blame, because your silence condones the rot.

Eventually, we will be driven out of Alberton North and it will become a dirty Third World slum, like Hillbrow.

Thereafter other areas of Alberton will follow.

We cannot trust the police to do their jobs. We cannot trust the council to enforce by-laws. We cannot place any trust in the Liquor Board. In the end we will have to voice our complaints every day or we, the “good people”, will be forced out of this area.

If you stay silent and do not speak up you are a part of this problem. Remember you, the silent resident of Alberton: Your silence condones this rot!

We will not get the future we think we deserve…

We will get the future we fight for!
