Road markings in Alrode a problem

A very dangerous situation has arisen at the intersection of Garfield Road and Combrinck Street in Alrode, due to the road markings being illegible and a stop sign is missing. Unless rectified, this may lead to fatal collisions

ALBERTON – Traffic travelling in a south-westerly direction in Garfield Road has no indication that traffic from the opposite direction has right of way to turn right into Combrinck Street.

As a result the intersection is very dangerous and several near-misses have been observed and reported by the employees of our company, Fuchs Electronics, which is situated at 15 Combrinck Street.

I would like to suggest various options to improve the traffic handling at the intersection as follows:

* Re-instate the road markings and missing stop street and warning signs.

* Consider installation of a slightly raised island to demarcate lanes, rather than only the painted lines which only last a few months due to the heavy traffic in this area.

* Consider conversion to a traffic circle or a traffic light.

I trust the EMM will evaluate this dangerous situation as a priority, and consider the suggestion to improve the safety of this intersection.

Comment:

I have sent this through to the roads department. I don’t have an official response from them as of yet, but will be meeting with them again as well as raising the issue with my ward committee in order to find an amicable resolution to this. As has been noted previously, there has been problems within the department which is beyond my control and scope, which has had a negative impact on service delivery. Community safety is of the highest priority for me and I welcome the community’s involvement with regards to these issues. I will seek official response from the department and will relay that in due course.
