GBP Update on Private Sector Energy Efficiency Project

JOHANNESBURG – This talk is to provide an update on the Private Sector Energy Efficiency (PSEE) Project was launched in December and aims to support the awareness and uptake of best practice in energy management and energy efficiency by South African industry, focusing on implementation and unlocking the key barriers to action.
The programme has three levels of service: remote advice for small businesses, technical face-to-face support for medium-sized companies, and longer term support of energy management and strategy with large companies.
These services are complemented by marketing and communications activities aimed at raising general awareness of energy efficiency issues and engaging with key stakeholders to encourage action and uptake.
The National Business Initiative (NBI) was awarded an amount of R8.6 million from the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID) to implement a countrywide programme of support to improve energy efficiency in the South African private sector.
This project, which comes under the UK-SA Bilateral relationship through the UK Government’s Department for International Development, will contribute to the implementation of the South African government’s strategy for reducing energy demand. The PSEE Project will be governed by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee led by the Department of Energy.
The special guest speaker at the event will be Peter Mukoma, who is the Programme Head of the Private Sector Energy Efficiency Project at National Business Initiative Programme Manager: Energy Efficiency Leadership Network, which he helped launch in Dec 2011 at COP17.
Peter Mukoma is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD from Wits University. Before joining the NBI, he worked for Foster Wheeler SA as a Senior Process Engineer working on a number of process design projects. He also worked as a consulting engineer for COMPS – a research group at Wits University working on process synthesis of a number of Fischer Tropsch technology projects. Peter also has experience and knowledge of Lead Acid Battery Technology, Fischer Tropsch Technology, Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Technology and various renewable energy technologies. He sits on a panel of experts for the Climate Innovation Centre, is a member of the steering committee for the Industrial Energy Efficiency Project at the NCPC and an Advisory Board member for Chemical Engineering at UNISA.
The event will take place on December 5 at 07:30 for 08:00 at Thaba Eco Hotel on Impala Road, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. The cost is R50 per person payable at the entrance and includes finger snacks.
