Alberton loses to Soweto

Alberton Premier League side let it slip away at the Alberton Oval, when the home side let Soweto “escape from jail” in their innings, and eventually Alberton was beaten by Soweto on the first innings.

Soweto batted first and was pinned on 95/5, before the undefeated sixth partnership between Soweto captain Lefa Thaba 70 not out and Tiaan Barnard 21 not out brought the Soweto total to the eventual winning score of 186/5. Thaba scored his undefeated 70 from 60 balls in 58 minutes, and Tiaan Barnard’s 21 not out came from 32 balls in 47 minutes.

The fall of Soweto’s five wickets went as follows: First wicket on 25, 2/53, 3/69, 4/89 and 5/95.

Alberton bowling figures read as follows: Brian Barnard 11-2-48-2, Captain Ziyaad Desai 16-2-54-1 and the other wicket taker Grant MoKoena 16-5-36-1. The fifth wicket came from a run out, in which White and Martino were involved.

Ashley Martins 30 and Donovan Aucamp opened the Alberton innings, and Aucamp was the first to go, caught by Moropa and bowled on seven runs by Wiaan Mulder. The latter also ended Brian Barnard’s innings for eight runs when Masondo took the catch.

Both Grant Mokoena and Farhaan Sinwalla lost their wickets for a single run each to bring the score to 50/5, and a big mountain to climb lay ahead for Ziyaad Desai’s young team.

Then Juanre Potgieter top batsman with 64 and Morne McMaster started the partnership, which could have saved the day for the home side by amassing a solid partnership for the sixth wicket to take the score to beyond 100, but at the end it was not enough, and Alberton was bowled out for 174 and 12 runs short of victory. Alberton was without the services of experienced players Juan le Maitre and Craig Schlebusch, due to injuries.

Scorecards of other league games: President League had a bye (no game). Sunday 2 league: Alberton lost on the first innings to Wanderers at Wanderers: Alberton scored 133/10 and Wanderers 202/10.

The player of the match was without doubt Tyler Trenoweth, who was the best batsman with 64 runs, the same score of top Premier batsman Juanre Potgieter. Tyler was also best bowler with three wickets from eight overs.

Alberton Premier League faced Glenvista the past weekend at home and will play away this coming weekend February 22.
