Varsity rugby kicks off

The 2016 Varsity Cup competition kicked off with UJ’s first outing and an impressive 46-10 victory over newcomers Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein. A week later last year’s runner-up Pukke took on Maties.

ALBERTON – Alberton rugby supporters’ interest in UJ lies in the fact that the team captained by Kobus Porter is coached by ex-Marais Viljoen coach Werner Janse van Rensburg, and they will meet Alberton later in the season on Saturday June 6 at Alberton Stadium.

As far as the Pukke team, captained by Jeandré Rudolph, is concerned, the Pukke Varsity hostel competition team Patria, runners-up last year, is co-coached by Alberton’s own legendary no.10 fly-half André Pretorius.

According to Patria chief coach Henry Stewart, André will make a big difference and is highly respected by the players. For 36-year old André, this is the beginning of another venture where he could possibly reach the top again. Watch out for Patria in Varsity Cup hostel competition.
