Seven utterly unromantic movies for Valentine’s Day

Perhaps you don’t believe in the commercialisation of love; recently become single; or you just don’t like making a fuss.

Whatever your reason for wanting to ignore Valentine’s Day, here is a list of seven movies that will completely distract you from romantic love.

1. The Usual Suspects – a crime thriller with an impeccable ensemble cast headed by Kevin Spacey that will engross you with its dark mystery. No need to look at your phone for messages from loved ones; your eyes will be glued to the screen.

2. The Shining – a classic horror movie starring Jack Nicholson to remind you of what happens when you allow romantic feelings to be indulged – you go stark raving mad.

3. Boiler Room – Ben Affleck, Vin Diesel and Giovanni Ribisi star in this crime drama about the dangers of overwhelming ambition. The quick pace and rapid fire dialogue will make you forget about love and remember how much money you’re saving by skipping V-Day.

4. No Country for Old Men – an ultra-violent, Oscar-winning, western thriller by the Coen brothers. The enigmatic villain with an unsightly haircut will crush any amorous inclinations that try to sneak into your thoughts.

5. Conan the Barbarian – Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this sword and sandals adventure that is so packed with insane 80’s camp violence it will drive romance from your heart; see it flee before you and hear the lamentations of its impulses.

6. The Silence of the Lambs – the first appearance in film of Anthony Hopkins as Dr Hannibal Lecter aka Hannibal the Cannibal will leave you with a strong impulse to be alone for the weekend.

7. The Boondock Saints – this crime film about two fraternal twins taking on the Russian mob has enough action, humour and quotable moments to see you through anything; including Valentine’s Day.
