Why me and not them?

I stay in St Michael Road, New Redruth. Over the past weeks, we have been subjected to load shedding strictly according to the issued schedule (on a daily basis).

In principal, I have no problem with this as it is consistent with what I expect. However, my friends stay in Launceston Street, also in New Redruth. Over the past two weeks they have not been affected by load shedding at all, not even once.

Every evening we pack our uncooked food and head over to their house to prepare our meals with the electricity that they conveniently have. It is also New Redruth; in fact it is two streets from my house. The schedule does not make any distinction between different areas in New Redruth (B2).

How is it that they enjoy uninterrupted electricity while mine is cut strictly according to the schedule? Apart from the fact that I think three and a half hours without electricity a day is ridiculous, especially on Sunday afternoons when you have to prepare for the week ahead. I now realise that I’m one of the fools that were singled out to be bear the brunt for the area.

It would have been great if my friends up the road were subjected to half of that three and a half hours and I would gladly absorb the other half. After all, they don’t have kids to feed, get to bed early, and get ready for school in the morning.

For clarity on the issue, I have tried the Alberton and Thokoza Customer Care Centre (what a joke). After several attempts and dropped lines as usual, the operator said she will put me on hold and get some answers for me. Well, she put me on hold for sure, 11 minutes of it until I eventually decided to end the call and go through the whole process of getting connected to an operator again.

The second operator bluntly told me that she knows that not the whole area is switched off but doesn’t know who does it, why they do it, or who can tell me the who’s and why’s. She also said she has no knowledge of problems with the call centre telephone lines.
