Podium position for Southerner

More than 100 paddlers enjoyed the mild autumn early morning chill.

THE river race season is now back in full swing, with the novice easier shorter races done and the first real river race enjoyed on Sunday, May 24.

A 22km event, hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club, from Meyerton to Three Rivers, on the Klip River, was enjoyed by more than 100 paddlers, many of whom are gaining experience on rivers and earning points towards A grade status, to be able to compete in their first A grade river race, the Fish River Marathon, in October.

Keith Beeston from the South, partnered with John Rowan from the East, and together they won the grand master age category podium position for over 60’s, finishing the race in 1:55. While Beeston is a member of the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan, Rowan is a member of the East Rand Kayak club based at Homestead Dam.
