Southerners ready for war

Paul Kamanga and Jason Bedeman will the the main undercard of the evening.

IF you are from the South, then you know what it means to have two top boxers vying for a spot in a South African tournament.

It is indeed a pity that Paul Kamanga and Jason Bedeman must step into the ring to fight each other to further their professional career. The one who is victorious on Saturday, September 19, at Uncivil War boxing tournament will advance to the next round – to fight for a world title.

Uncivil War Box ‘n Dine will be presented by Golden Gloves Boxing Promotions in conjunction with Emperors Palace and will feature an action-packed bill.

The Kamanga/Bedeman bout will be the undercard of the evening where Simphiwe Khonco will challenge Hekkie Budler for his WBA and IBO minimumweight belts. To add to the excitement of the main card, Hall of Fame official, Stan Christodoulou, will be right in the thick of things when the two will battle it out.

Three top judges have been appointed for the bout, Jean Louis Legland (France), Juan Manuel Garcia Reys (Spain) and Leszek Jankowiak (Poland).

This brings us back to the two Southerners, Kamanga and Bedeman. Both boxers need to have this win under their belt in the welterweight division fight over ten rounds for a chance to fight for the IBO title at the end of the year Christmas Cracker tournament.

At the age of 22, Kamanga has stepped up a division since winning his first title, WBA Pan African Super Lightweight. With a gritty record of 15 bouts, 8 KOs and no losses, his Box Office camp, under the watchful eye of Anton Gilmore, would like to make a big impact on the evening. Kamanga is a powerful puncher and, because of this, he has taken down many opponents.

On the other hand, Bedeman is a more technical boxer and, in the light of being out of contention for a while, under his new tutor, Manny Fernandes from BRD Boxing Academy, will be back with vengeance.

The 26-year-old’s record consists of 23 bouts, 18 won, 15 KOs, 2 losses and 3 draws. It was Ali Funeke who put him to bed with a KO in 2013 after which he stopped his career until June 6, 2015, when he made a welcome return to the ring. He beat Raymond Kapula with a TKO.

Promotor Rodney Berman is full of confidence that this tournament will arguably bring out the best in South African boxing, a tournament for the boxing fraternity not to be missed. In one of the other bouts, Ryno Liebenberg will make an appearance, while Roam Zhailauov will face-off against Thompson Mokwana.
