RWC round one: What the Vodacom Rugby App stats show

Lock Lood de Jager ranked 20th in defenders beaten bracket - Vodacom Rugby App.

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s shocking below-par performance in their opening Rugby World Cup (RWC) match against Japan is also reflected in the statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby App.

Japanese fullback Ayumu Goromaru was almost single handedly responsible for the demise of one of world rugby’s superpowers and deservingly topped several statistics.

Goromaru contributed 24 of his side’s 34 points with a try, five penalties and two conversions to top the points and penalty goal categories.

Springbok stalwart Schalk Burger was one of the few shining lights for South Africa topping the carries statistics.

Burger made 22 carries with one of the weekend’s standouts, England’s Mike Brown making 20 carries.

Brown was one of England’s most dangerous weapons in the opening match against Fiji where he scored a brace of tries while continuously asking questions of the Fijian defence with his piercing runs. He was worth his weight in gold on attack making double the amount of clean breaks than his nearest rival. Brown also topped the defenders beaten and metres run categories.

Brown made six clean breaks while he beat 11 defenders and gained a total of 191 metres.

Fiji’s Nemani Nadolo and Tim Nanai-Williams of Samoa are tied second in the defenders beaten bracket with seven each.

Lock Lood de Jager was the best South African in this category where he ranked 20th after beating four defenders.

While Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis is among the top-ranked players in the turnovers won category with two, he also conceded the most penalties along with Tonga’s Lua Lokotui with four calls going against each of them.
