ALBERTON – Reading Country Club’s 9th annual charity golf day, hosted by the ladies golf section and held on Heritage Day, turned out to be a huge success. The extended field was packed to capacity with 124 competing players.
Prize-giving and lunch started at 15:00 and the bar and outside area, decorated with a festive summer feel, had everyone chatting and enjoying the festivities till the early evening.
Format for the day’s competition was a Betterball Stableford. Winners, on 47 points, were Shelley Daymond and Mariaan Vermeulen. Handing over the Marc D’Ewes floating trophy was previous lady captain, Augustine D’Ewes. “I’m so proud of what has been achieved at the club and I know my son would have been equally proud of you girls,” Augustine said. Marc played in the first charity day at Reading in 2006 and finished second overall. Tragically, Marc passed away two days later from meningitis.
Monies raised on this day will be partly donated to Reading CC for much needed upgrades at the club with a share of the profit to be donated to the Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services in New Market Park.
In thanking the club, the golfers and the various sponsors, Marietjie Tame, marketing and fundraising manager at Stepping Stone Hospice, emphasized the importance of community involvement in their organization. “I have been a member at this club for many years and it never ceases to amaze me how the members of this club can pull together to help those in need. Life-limiting illnesses affect us all in one way or another and with your help and contribution we can make the journey easier for those affected.”
