Hospital staff take pride in their heritage
The hospital staff joined millions of other South Africans who got dressed in their traditional attire to boast with their cultural roots.
Staff members from Bertha Gxowa Hospital, in Germiston, recently celebrated Heritage Day and joined millions of other South Africans who got dressed up in their traditional attire.
Each of the hospital’s departments dressed to the nines and also had the opportunity to express what makes their culture so unique.
The Zulu staff members wasted no time dancing and ululating, whilst the Tsonga staff members laid humbly on the ground as a sign of acknowledgement and respect.
The Ndebele staff members were seen showing off their colourful blankets and beaded neck pieces, whilst the Swati staff members told stories of their kings and took pride in their language.
Queen Mabena, from the hospital’s finance department, said she is proud of her Ndebele heritage.
“My people are very respectful and loving. We are a minority but we do not forget our traditions and practices,” she said.
Zandile Majola, from human resources, said her Swati heritage can be summed up in one sentence: “Umuntfu ngu muntfu ngebantfu, which means I am because we are.”
The day ended in high spirits with some dancing and singing of traditional songs.
