Rhema is determined to be a success

Rhema Varrie’s life has changed forever after his participation in Idols SA and he hopes to make an impact in the lives of others and to give back to the community.

EDEN PARK- Rhema Varrie’s (21) life has changed forever for the better with his participation in Idols SA season 11 and he hopes to make an impact in the lives of others and to give back to the community.

Wednesday, November 25, saw Rhema visit Eldorado Park as his homecoming coincides with the 16 days of activism campaign. Rhema visited several lolly lounges where drugs are sold to young people and urged the community to become active citizens and protect women and children against the effects of drug abuse. He has joined forces with the #YellowRibbon project, a division of Crystal Church. The project’s mission is to fight drug abuse in Eden Park and other parts of South Africa.

The church’s recovery and wellness centre has trained recovery coaches that work with addicts. Rhema has been wearing the yellow ribbon on the Idols stage for some weeks now to show his support for this project. “Community work has always been a passion of mine and fighting drug abuse is part of that,” Rhema said.

In the meantime, Rhema is also writing his own songs and developing his music. “I have started writing my own stuff and hope to bring out a CD in the near future. I am still under contract with Universal Studio for three months and after that I can start considering other options in terms of music producers,” Rhema explained. Up until the competition started Rhema was the sole provider for his family and like one of the Idols judges, Unathi Msengana, said, “This competition changed the course of your life and rightfully so.”

He is young man who’s not afraid to take risks and he followed his dream with determination, humbleness and hard work. “This is just the beginning for me. I’m already working on my career and promise that I will make South Africa proud. People voted for more than just another idol, they voted for a role model. They need someone their children will look up to,” Rhema added.

Eden Park will be staging a homecoming for Rhema on Saturday, November 28. Allcot Strydom a member of the official organising committee made up of community leaders and family, promises that it will be an exciting day. “This event does not only celebrate his achievement, but is also an opportunity to get the message of drug awareness to the Ekurhuleni community, bringing hope and courage to many young people.
